Department of Modern Greek Studies

Programs of Study – Undergraduate Studies

With the main focus of the degree course being Modern Greek Studies, students learn both theoretical and practical aspects of the Greek language. No prior knowledge of the language is necessary in order to follow lessons as it is taught from the beginning. In addition to classes in Modern Greek, students have modules in Ancient Greek and the history of the Greek language. They learn about the basic characteristics of Ancient and Byzantine literary and cultural traditions, as well as Modern Greek literature and Greek literature from Cyprus. During their studies, they are introduced to the characteristics of the Balkans as a geographical, cultural, historical and political region of Europe. They acquire basic knowledge (historical and cultural) about the Balkan peoples, recognizing the cultural and civilizational context in which the peoples of the Balkans developed and created their works. They also gain a synoptic overview of the historical, cultural and civilizational development of the Greeks, which enables them to learn about the Greek people and their contribution to the development of modern European society more comprehensively and in more detail. Finally, they learn methods and techniques for teaching Modern Greek as a foreign language, so they can pass on the knowledge they have acquired during their studies to anyone interested in learning the language.
