Department of Iberian Studies

Programs of Study – Undergraduate Studies

History

The Department of Iberian Studies consists of three mutually complementary units: Group for Spanish language and Hispanic Literatures (4 year B.A. program), Section for Portuguese studies (from 1997 till 1999 and from 2005/2006 until today), and newly formed Section for Catalan studies (since 2005/2006) (in both sections elective courses in language, literature and cultures of the Catalan and Portuguese speaking countries are offered). The academic curricula at the Department are part of a larger curricular framework of the Faculty of Philology, entitled Languages, Literatures and Cultures, an interdisciplinary academic program at B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. levels, which promotes a thorough and inclusive liberal arts education. A number of obligatory and elective courses are offered, which help our students develop theoretical knowledge in the areas of linguistics, literature and culture. Methodological orientation geared toward the students’ development of the capacity for critical thinking prepares them for independent academic research and/or continuous, life-long professional development. Communicative competence in Spanish, Portuguese and Catalan is in the focus of our B.A. program and our graduates are capable to successfully communicate in these languages in academic, professional, administrative and private domains of language use. At B.A. and M.A. levels, literary history and literary theory, language for special purposes and literary and professional translation are offered as elective courses, along with courses in didactics of teaching Spanish as a foreign language (assuring academic credits required of those students wishing to pursue a career as language teachers in formal education at primary and secondary levels).

The Department of Iberian Studies has a long tradition of fruitful cooperation with national and international institutions of higher learning. Currently, the Department actively participates in University of Belgrade sponsored Erasmus + mobility cooperation with a number of academic institutions in Spain and in other parts of Europe, supporting our students study abroad programs, welcoming international students, and exchanging teaching staff between ours and partner institutions. Likewise, we have been very active in the Central European Exchange Program for University Studies (CEEPUS), which has a very dynamic and creative network of Central European Departments of Spanish and Hispanic studies. Since January 2017, the Department publishes a digital scientific journal entitled Beoiberística: Revista de Estudios Ibéricos, Latinoamericanos y Comparativos. The Department also has a very strong publication record, which has transpired in a number of academic monographs, literary translations and didactic materials.
