Chinese Language, Literature and Culture

Chinese has been studied at the Faculty of Philology since 1974, when the Lectorate was opened and when the Library of the Department of Oriental Studies began to form a special collection of works focusing on Sinology. Chinese was available as an elective course until 1985, when the Sub-Department for Chinese Language and Literature was founded, which enabled full four-year studies of Chinese philology.

Based on a carefully designed curriculum and with modern teaching methods used by Serbian teaching staff and native Chinese language instructors, students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of the Chinese language, master the skills of literary and non-literary translation, and learn the basics of Classical Chinese. In the various Chinese literature and culture modules, they become familiar with the literary, philosophical and cultural traditions of China and its transformation in modern times. By studying China in a global context and comparing it with the Western cultural matrix, students will develop the ability to think critically and prepare themselves for independent research in their master's and doctoral studies.
