Japanese Language, Literature and Culture

Japanese is taught at the Faculty, starting with the very basics. Students learn how to write and become familiar with all three scripts: hiragana, katakana and ideogram kanji. In addition, all aspects of Japanese linguistics are studied: grammar, morphology, syntax, etc. Students who enrolled with prior knowledge of the language will have the opportunity to study all segments of the Japanese language in more detail and to build on this solid foundation.

In addition to acquiring practical skills and knowledge in using the language, completing a degree course in Japanese Studies allows you to learn a lot about Japan itself, its unusually diverse spiritual and material culture, and its long and dynamic history. You will learn about courtiers, samurai and their battles and destinies, and also about Shintoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and the influences they had on Japanese society and culture. You will also study the ways in which the Japanese accepted foreign influences, learned from their experiences, and built an ever-better Japan, which we still admire today.

Great attention is also paid to Japanese literature, from classical to contemporary. The teaching staff will convey their love for reading and interpreting Japanese poetry to you, will awaken in you an enthusiasm for studying classical and contemporary works, which are already an integral part of world heritage, and will also reveal to you possibly unknown aspects of this inexhaustible treasure, inspiring you to conduct independent research.
