Serbian Language and Literature

Programs of Study – Undergraduate Studies

At the Serbian Language and Literature Department, students can choose between two majors, depending on their interests. The compulsory and elective courses available allow students to fully master the Serbian language standard, the history of the language, the history of literature, the theory of literature, and an overview of literature from the classical to the contemporary age. The degree course aims to educate future linguists and Serbian language and literature teachers and to equip them to work in all educational institutions, as well as in cultural and scientific institutions. The most talented students are equipped with the knowledge to work in academic research, which provides a constant stream of young academics. By choosing from the theoretical and methodological courses available, students work towards one of the two majors offered from the first year of their studies – in the past a TEACHING or PHILOLOGICAL major, now known as a PHILOLOGY AND TEACHING major or a PHILOLOGY AND LINGUISTICS major.

Serbian Language and Literature – Teaching major (for students enrolled after 2015) / Serbian Language and Literature – Philology and teaching major (for students enrolled from 2023 onwards)

This major gives students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with all the basic disciplines of the science of language and literature during their four years of studies, as well as to learn about Serbian language and literature teaching methodology. They will study and prepare for a career in teaching and could even continue their academic career at the Faculty itself.

Serbian Language and Literature – Philological major (for students enrolled after 2015) / Serbian Language and Literature – Philology and linguistics major (for students enrolled from 2023 onwards)

This major gives students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with subjects such as the Cultural History of the Serbs, Journalism Stylistics, Culturology, Communicology, Lexicography, Linguistic Culturology, Introduction to General Linguistics, the Evolution of Writing Scripts, and Lexicographic Practice in Scientific Institutions. Various internships are offered: proofreading and editing in a publishing house, working as a radio and television announcer, proofreading as a scriptwriter for a language program, and lexicographic work in a scientific institution.
