Czech Language, Literature and Culture

The founding of Serbian Czech Studies is closely related to the activities of Professor Radovan Košutić (1866–1949), owing to whom a special Department for East and West Slavic Languages and Literature was opened at the Great School in Belgrade. Professor Košutić worked at this Department until the beginning of the Second World War, teaching courses in Russian and Polish. However, two more important factors contributed to the final emergence of Czech Studies in Belgrade. The first was the signing of a cultural convention between Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia after the First World War, thus establishing close ties between the universities and scientific institutions of the two countries, and this led to the second factor – the opportunity for student exchanges.

As can be concluded from the name of the Department, during the four-year undergraduate program (8 semesters), students will gradually master the Czech language through communication with native and local teaching staff, who will introduce them to the theoretical study of the modern language and historical grammar.

Studying Czech will quickly allow students to start reading the most important works in Czech literature in the original. However, Czech literature has always enjoyed great popularity and respect amongst the Serbian readership; therefore, books by a large number of Czech writers have been translated into Serbian, which enables students to familiarize themselves easily and quickly with classics of Czech literature and also contemporary works. The focused study of Czech culture is very important because it allows students to gain insight not only into Czech historical and cultural traditions, but, above all, into contemporary trends when it comes to art, education and politics, as well as Czech-Serbian economic relations. The knowledge acquired in the field of Czech culture can also help students to decide more easily which field they want to specialize in during their master's and doctoral studies.
