Ukrainian Language, Literature and Culture

Ukrainian Studies as an academic field and study profile at the University of Belgrade was established in the early 1990s. In 1991, the Department of Slavic Studies at the Faculty of Philology introduced the subject Ukrainian language and literature as a second Slavic language for the first time in Serbia.

The Ukrainian language is studied contrastively, in comparison with Serbian and other Slavic languages, which ensures a comprehensive education in Slavic studies and a range of linguistic perspectives.

The rich knowledge that students acquire during their studies and the speaking and translation skills they master are sufficient for successful communication in the Ukrainian language in any situation and for further professional or academic research work. Through the analysis and interpretation of literary texts of various genres and poetics, students become familiar with the rich Ukrainian literature and acquire the skills of critical and hermeneutic, literary-historical and literary-theoretical analysis. Comparative study of the history of the Ukrainian language and literature in the Slavic context and lectures on the cultural and political history of Ukraine provide a complex picture of the genesis and history of Ukrainian culture and the influence of East and West on the formation of a distinctive Ukrainian national identity. Students work in small groups in modernly equipped classrooms with native Ukrainian speakers. An individual approach is taken to each student with interactive teaching provided and teaching materials available in digital form on the Moodle platform.
