      The goal Comparative survey of the western canon literary works from the medieval and early modern times in the cultural, literary, and historical context. Comprehensive outline of the discursive formations of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Relatedness of the cannonical works to the non-lierary, philosophical and political contemporary texts.
      The outcome Students will become acquainted with the major lines of different national literary traditions in the European Middle Ages and the Renaissance. They should develop capabilities to detect, understand and comment upon key literary, theoretical, and historical phaenomena in the European traditions: Italian, French, Spanish, English, and German. Special attention is given to the comparative understanding of migrations of themes and motifs, and to interliterary influences.
      Contents
      Contents of lectures Poetics in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance. Medieval and renaissance literary genres. Western Christian theology, mysticism, scholasticism, the Reformation, and the Counter-Reformation. Major philosophical perspectives: humanism, neo-platonism, Machiavellian political theory.
