    The goal Acquiring knowledge of the 17th century French literature and civilization, developing critical thinking skills.
    The outcome Students will learn about the continuity in French literature evolution by familiarizing themselves with the Baroque aesthetics (emerging from the late 16th century) and the French classicism (as well as its return to the Antiquity literary models). They will also enhance their knowledge of Cartesian approach as one of the fundamental features and values of "French spirit".

    Contents of lectures The course will provide an overview of French political, social and cultural history of the 17th century.Topics deal with roman, poetry and theater of the Baroque period, as well as with aspects of Louis XIV's classical aesthetic and analysis of its literary and artistic manifestations, its socio-political and philosophical underpinnings, and its counter-culture(s). Philosophical and teoretical basis (Decartes, Pascal). Poetics of Classicism (Boileau). French classical theater (Corneille, Racine, Molière). Psychological novel. French moralists. New insights into 17th century literary creation through the work of literary critics such as S. Doubrovsky, J. Starobinski, R. Barthes, J. Rousset.
    Contents of exercises Disquetudes of the Baroque period (Théophile de Viau, Chassignet, Malherbe). Spirit of preciosity (Madeleine de Scudéry). Pierre Corneille's Illusion comique. Pascal and Jansenism. Decartes and Cartesian mind. Classicism and search for regularity: Corneille's plays, Racine's tragedies, Molière's comedies; Novel La princesse de Clèves by Madame de La Fayette, Fables (Jean de La Fontaine), Lettres (Madame de Sévigné), French moralists (François de la Rochefoucauld, Jean de La Bruyère ).

    Methods of teaching Lectures, discussions, multimedia presentations (documentary and historical drama films, film adaptations of literary works), essays, analysis of individually prepared texts. Continuous oral examination of acquired knowledge and skills. The course is mainly taught in French.
