The goal | Acquiring knowledge of the 18th century French literature and civilization. The age of Enlightenment in larger context and its impact on Western civilization. Introduction to philosophical and critical thinking of this period, highlighting the heritage of Enlightenment and French Revolution ideas. Developing students' ability to understand and analyze historical and literary notions. | |||
The outcome | Student will be learning about the most important notions and writers of this period and will develop critical thinking skills. They will be able to follow the course and progress of ideas and literary techniques of the 18th century France and to evaluate their impact to modern societies | |||
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | A brief review of political, economical and social history of France in the 18th century. Cultural history. Paradigm shift at the turn of the century (1680-1720). The Age of Enlightenment. Progress of scientific and philosophical spirit, battle against traditions and dogmas. New concepts of progress, happiness and nature. Encyclopédie. Sentimentalism. French Revolution. A writer and a book. Old and new literary genres. Philosophical prose. The evolution of theatre: comedy, tragedy, bourgeois tragedy. Narrative forms in the 18th century - novel, short story, autobiography, memoirs. Philosophical novel, epistolary novel and roman-mémoires. At the end of the course several lectures are dedicated to a particular literary question (p. ex. libertine novel, memoirs, orientalism, myths of Enlightenment), or to the works of a single writer. | |||
Contents of exercises | Introducing the most important 18th century French writers through reading of novels (Le Sage, Montesquieu, Prévost, Voltaire, Rousseau, Diderot, Laclos, Marquis de Sade) and plays (Marivaux, Beaumarchais). Instructions for individual essay writing. Presentations of students' essays and related discussions. | |||

Methods of teaching | Lectures, discussions, analysis of selected texts, work with visual materials, continuous oral examination of acquired knowledge, writing two term papers. Individual student's work outside the course - reading selected texts and preparing a discussion, taking individual notes on books read, essay writing, online tests and exercises, Internet research, watching recommended films and sequences. The course is taught in French. | |||
