      The goal Basic Concepts of Literary Studies is an introductory course for undergraduate students of literature, whose purpose is to familiarize students with the fundamentals of literary theory, i.e., the key concepts, ideas, approaches and methods in the study of literature.

      Contents of lectures (1) Towards a definition of literature; (2) Linguistics, poetics, and the study of literature; (3) Literary theory, criticism, and history; (4) Literary studies: a historical overview; "extrinsic" vs. "intrinsic" approaches in the study of literature; (5) National, Comparative, World and General Literature; (6) Theory of literary historiography; (7) The notion of literary evolution; (8) The challenges of periodization; (9) Literary genres and the issues of generic classification; (10) Theory of narrative: from formalism to structuralism.
      Contents of exercises The students will conduct an independent research project whose goal is to apply a specific theoretical model and method to a topic of their own choosing.
