      The goal This course aims to engage students into a critical debate in order to define, analyse and deconstruct a key concepts and ideas from the late 19th century and first half of 20th century: modernity, modernism, point of view, stream of consciousness etc. Students will learn in more detail about a "double image" of modernity and modernism, that is, about various - often conflicted - discourses which had marked this particular period in literature and arts.
      The outcome Students will comprehend selected critical and theoretical texts and acquire knowledge that they will be able to adequately use in understanding literary texts from the period of modernism.
      Contents
      Contents of lectures At the center of the course are key texts of modernism, such as the essay "Modern Fiction" by Virginia Woolf. In addition, modernist (literary) magazines in English are explored. The selected texts contribute to the understanding of literature from the period of modernism, but also to the understanding of the history of certain concepts, such as tradition.
      Contents of exercises Reading of the theoretical and critical texts; presentations and discussions led by students; use of discussed concepts in the analysis of concrete literary works.
