    The goal Students should be able to understand 19th-century French literature from pre-romanticism to symbolism in the light of its historical, geographical, and social conditions of origin, and to comprehend its distinctive features. The study of this subject should enable students to become familiar with the history of literature from pre-romanticism to symbolism and to master the terminology of literary criticism necessary for the analysis of selected passages from the literary works of this period.
    The outcome In preparation for later professional life, students acquire the following competencies: thorough knowledge of the main currents of 19th century French literature from pre-romanticism to symbolism and understanding of their historical significance, ability to think critically and analytically in the field of this literature.
    Contents
    Contents of lectures French literature of the 19th century is examined. A historical survey of literary phenomena from pre-romanticism to symbolism is given: 1. Novelistic creation. The poetics of pre-romanticism (Chateaubriand, Madame de Stael), the realistic novel (Balzac, Stendhal, Flaubert), a brief survey of the work of Georges Sand and Prosper Mérimée, the poetics of Victor Hugo's novels, the principles of Alphonse de Lamartine's prose, a brief survey of the prose of Barbey d'Aurevilly. 2. Poetic Creation. The poetics of the romantic poets (Alphonse de Lamartine, Alfred de Mise, Alfred de Vigny, Victor Hugo), a brief survey of the poetry of the minor French romantics, the poetics of Gérard de Nerval, a brief survey of the poetics of larpurartism (Théophile Gautier), the theoretical theses of Parnassianism (Lecomte de Lille ), the poetics of the precursors of symbolism and modern poetry in general (Charles Baudelaire, Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud), the poetry of Stéphane Mallarmé and symbolist poetics. 3. Dramatic creation. The poetics of romantic theater. - After adopting the main poetic principles of the most important representatives of French literature from pre-romanticism to symbolism, a special series of lessons will delve into certain topics related to the novelistic and poetic tendencies of the period.
    Contents of exercises Students actively participate in the analysis of characteristic passages from the works of the above-mentioned French writers of the 19th century in order to observe, in a diachronic perspective, the main features of the work of these writers through concrete examples, and then produce an independent research paper on the given topic.
