    The goal Students should be able to understand French literature from surrealism to 1980 against the background of the historical, geographical, and social circumstances in which it developed, and to comprehend its distinctive features. The study of this subject should enable students to become familiar with the literary history of the 20th century from surrealism to 1980 and to master the terminology of literary criticism necessary for the analysis of selected passages from the literary works of this period.
    The outcome In preparation for later professional life, students acquire the following competencies: thorough knowledge of the basic currents of 20th century French literature from surrealism to 1980 and understanding of their historical significance, ability to think critically and analytically in the field of this literature.

    Contents of lectures A historical overview of literary phenomena from surrealism to 1980 is given in connection with the novelistic and the poetic work of the most important representatives.1. Novelistic creation. Surrealist novel: André Breton, Louis Aragon. Novels about human destiny: André Malraux, novels by Francois Mauriac. Existentialist novel: Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus. Nouveau roman: Nathalie Sarraute, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Michel Butor, Claude Simon. Poetic flow in the novel: Julien Gracq. A brief survey of the works of Boris Vian, Raymond Queneau, Marguerite Duras, Georges Perec, Albert Cohen, Michel Tournier. 2. Poetic creation. Poetic principles of surrealist poetry by René Char, Francis Ponge, Philippe Jaccottet, Henri Michaux, Jacques Prévert et Yves Bonnefoy. - After adopting the main poetic principles of the most important representatives of French literature from surrealism to 1980, a special series of lessons will delve into certain topics related to the novelistic and poetic tendencies of the period (e.g. conception of literary character in the 20th century novel, forms of individual rebellion in the 20th century novel, poetics of space in contemporary French poetry, the theme of war in 20th century French poetry).
    Contents of exercises Students actively participate in the analysis of characteristic passages from the works of the above-mentioned French writers of the 20th century in order to observe, in a diachronic perspective, the main features of the work of these writers through concrete examples, and then produce an independent research paper on the given topic.
