      The goal By combining theoretical insights with a historical overview of the most important conceptions of literary genre from Aristotle's "Poetics" to today, "Theories of genre" is intended to promote a deeper understanding of the hermeneutical, ideological, aesthetic, and axiological implications of the application of generic categories to literature and art.

Genre, canon, literarity, 5. Classical genre theories (from Plato to Romanticism), 6. Romanticism and modern genre theories (Hegel's "triad" and its heritage), 7. The biological paradigm (Brunetière's evolutionism), 8. The crisis of genre theory in the 20th century, 9. "Theoretical" vs. "historical" genres: the renewal of generic theory in the works of Tzvetan Todorov and Northrop Frye, 10. The revision of generic theories in the works of Gérard Genette and Jean-Marie Schaeffer, 12. New Rhetoric and Old Genre Theory, 13. Categories and art: genre, aesthetic experience, and interpretation.
