    The goal A Comparative survey of the major lines of different traditions of the western canon from the Middle Ages to Romanticism, via the Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, and Enlightenment. The students should develop skills in detecting, understanding, and discussing the major literary, theoretical, and cultural phenomena in the different national traditions. They will be competent to analyze intercultural influences and to approach them from the comparatist perspective.
    The outcome Comprehensive knowledge of the literary, theoretical, cultural, and historical aspects of the late Middle Ages, the Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, Enlightenment, and Romanticism.
    Contents
    Contents of lectures Every lecture includes consideration of the theoretical principles of the respective period. Cultural phenomena of the Middle Ages: Christianity, courts and chivalry, medieval epic poetry, troubadour poetry. Dante's Commedia, Petrarch's Canzoniere, petrarchism and anti-petrarchism; Bocaccio's Decameron, Machiavelli's Prince, Erasmus' The Praise of Folly, Montaigne's Essays, Rabelais' novels, Bakhtin on Rabelais, Shakespeare and the Renaissance drama, Cervantes' Don Quixote. Milton's Paradise Lost, Classicism: Corneille, Moliere, Racine, Boileau, 18th century novel in Europe, Romanticism in Germany, England, France and Russia.
    Contents of exercises Discussions. Interpretation of the literary works.
