The goal | Introduction to some examples of French literature film adaptations, problems and challenges of turning a literary work into film, basic application of acquired knowledge and skills in classroom | |||
The outcome | Students will become able to interpret on an elementary level particular techniques of literary and cinema discourses and to learn about their application in teaching French language, literature and civilization. They will strengthen their knowledge of French civilization and cinematography. | |||
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Analyzing main questions of literary text adaptation. The issue of fidelity to the source material and creative freedom in its adaptation (familiarization with some positions of French filmmakers). Subjectivity and objectivity of judgment on a screened literary work. Analyzing didactisation examples of film sequences in secondary education. Comparative analysis of literary work and its film adaptation. Creation of didactic exercises from selected sequences. | |||
Contents of exercises | Parallel reading of literary text and its adaptation. Creation of didactic exercises from chosen film sequences. Literary texts and their film adaptations are chosen following several criteria (among which the level of language comprehension); they represent different historical and social periods and different periods of French literature; the directors of the adaptations are major representatives of French cinema: materials include Rohmer's ecranisation of Perseval, Cocteau's La Belle et la Bête, La Princesse de Clèves by Zulawski, Claude Chabrol's adaptation of La Parure by Guy De Maupassant, Reymond Queneau's Zazie dans le métro adapted into film by Louis Malle, L'Amant by Jean-Jacques Annaud adapted from the novel by Marguerite Duras. | |||

Methods of teaching | Students read complete literary work and watch its adaptations before class. Representative sequences are watched in class as an introduction to adaptation analysis. Students will resume and comment existing critical analysis of given films, discuss success of the adaptation following the criteria they discussed in class. They will practice how to make didactic materials from some film sequences and also comment cultural features of books and films, especially in cases of major historical transpositions. The course is taught in French. | |||
