The goal | This course is designed to train students in critical approach, to help them develop the necessary skills for interpreting literature and to make them comfortable speaking and writing on literary topics in French. Students learn to do close reading and analysis of a variety of literary works and to compose critical essays. | |||
The outcome | Students will enhance their knowledge of literary interpretation methodology using different types of 17th century French literary texts (poetry, prose and theatre) and will be able to use the acquired knowledge to individually interpret different texts and to apply the acquired skills in their future professional and academic activities (teaching, translating). | |||
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Introduction to essential notions and methods of literary studies and literary criticism, with the review of stylistic and rhetorical features characterizing lyric poetry, classical theater, novel, tale, fable, letters. Introduction to literary analysis techniques helping French language, literature and culture teaching. | |||
Contents of exercises | Commented reading and application of literary analysis techniques on interpreting representative extracts from plays (Corneille, Racine, Molière), poetry (Scarron), novels (Scarron, Madame de La Fayette, Cyrano de Bergerac), fables (La Fontaine), tales (Ch. Perrault) and letters (Mme de Sévigné). | |||

Methods of teaching | Lectures, discussions. Analysis of selected texts, continuous oral evaluation of acquired knowledge, tests, work with visual materials (documentary films, docudramas, film adaptations of the Enlightenment era literature). Individual student's work - reading selected texts and preparing a discussion, taking individual notes on books read, essay writting, Internet research and research in libraries. The course is mainly taught in French. | |||
