      The goal Introducing students to a critical debate within which important works of modernism would be analyzed. In this way, students acquire basic knowledge about important literary works from the beginning of the twentieth century, the context within which they were created, their reception, both then and later during the 20th and 21st centuries. In addition, students are introduced to some specifics of modernist prose: abandoning the usual portrayal of characters, changing traditional syntax and disrupting narrative coherence with the use of stream of consciousness and other new narrative strategies.
      The outcome Students will comprehend selected texts and will be able to adequately interpret them.
      Contents
      Contents of lectures At the center of the course are the key works of modernism, such as the novels of James Joyce and the essays of Virginia Woolf. In addition to dealing with narrative strategies, the point of view and the limits of knowledge, the focus will also be on interpretations that came from the contemporary approaches such as colonial and postcolonial criticism, feminist criticism, etc.
      Contents of exercises Reading theoretical and critical texts; presentations and discussions led by students; application of discussed concepts in the analysis of concrete literary works.
