| The goal | Introducing students to the periods of Slovak literature from the oldest written monuments from the second half of the 9th century to Classicism. Acquiring knowledge about the authors, works and characteristics of literature in the Middle Ages, Humanism and Renaissance, Baroque, devotionalism and Classicism. Appropriate attention is paid to the socio-political situation in the Habsburg Monarchy, philosophical contexts, as well as the poetic-typological specificities of the literature of these periods in the context of the development of European literature. | |||
| The outcome | The student acquires the ability to recognize the most striking features of older Slovak literature and the literature of the national revival. He learns to independently use scientific and professional literature in this field and can recognize basic literary and theoretical concepts that he/she becomes familiar with during the analysis and interpretation of a literary text.The student remembers basic information about the authors and the socio-political situation at the time the work was created, develops the ability to recognize read and interpreted works, and is able to place examples in a broader European context. | |||

| Contents of lectures | The student becomes familiar with the socio-political situation at the time of the establishment of the Great Moravian Principality, the mission of Cyril and Methodius, the position of Slovaks in the early Middle Ages, and the most significant representatives of Slovak literature in the period of humanism, the Renaissance, and the Baroque.He also learns about the periodization of the literature of the National Revival and receives an overview of the social and cultural situation during the Enlightenment and Classicism, which includes the reforms of Joseph II, the establishment of learned societies, and the Czech-Slovak chair at the Bratislava Lyceum.He becomes acquainted with the philosophical postulates of the European Enlightenment and Classicism. He learns about the first codification of the Slovak literary language, the first polemic and literary criticism and the first novel in Slovak literature, the dispute over prosody, inspiration from folk art, perspectives for the development of Slovak culture and the idea of Slovenian reciprocity, slovak classicist poetry and drama and the presence of elements of pre-romanticism in classicist authors. | |||

I. Bajza, poetry of J. Palkovic and B. Tablic and prose by J. Fandli and selected classicist works and works with elements of pre-romanticism (poetry by J. Kolar, P. J. Šafarik, J. Holi, drama by J.
