    The goal Students should be able to understand French literature from naturalism to modernism in the light of its historical, geographical, and social conditions of origin and to comprehend its distinctive features. The study of this subject should enable students to become familiar with the literary history of the 19th and 20th centuries from naturalism to modernism and to master the terminology of literary criticism necessary for the analysis of selected passages from the literary works of this period.
    The outcome In preparation for later professional life, students acquire the following competencies: thorough knowledge of the basic currents of French literature from naturalism to modernism and understanding of their historical significance, ability to think critically and analytically in the field of this literature.
    Contents
    Contents of lectures A historical overview of literary phenomena from naturalism to modernism is given in connection with the novelistic and the poetic work of the most important representatives. 1. The novelistic creation. The poetics of the naturalistic novel and the short story (Zola, Maupassant, Evenings in Medan), a brief overview of the work of the Goncourt brothers and Alphonse Daudet, the principles of the prose of Joris-Karl Huysmans, the poetics of Marcel Proust, the principles of the prose of André Gide. 2. Poetic creation of the 20th century. The poetic creation of the twentieth century. Poetic principles of Paul Claudel, Paul Valery, Guillaume Apollinaire.
    Contents of exercises Students actively participate in the analysis of characteristic passages from the works of the above-mentioned French writers of the 19th and 20th centuries in order to observe, in a diachronic perspective, the main features of the work of these writers through concrete examples, and then produce an independent research paper on the given topic.
