      The goal Understanding the specific characteristics of Spanish realism and identifying similarities and differences vis-à-vis the realist movement in other European countries; recognizing the significance of key representatives of Spanish realism within the context of the development of the modern Spanish novel and short story; and understanding realism as a constant throughout Spanish literature, from the earliest written sources to the modern era.
      The outcome The student applies theoretical knowledge acquired during their studies to the interpretation of specific texts from Spanish realist literature; employs appropriate terminology and actively interprets the work; classifies and explains in detail the characteristics of realist texts; and engages in reasoned discussion on the assigned topic.

      Contents of lectures Introduction to the interpretation of literary texts. Literary text and context. External and internal approaches to the study of literary texts. Realism and Naturalism. Distinctive features of Spanish Realism. French models. Similarities and differences compared to other European literatures. Key characteristics of the Spanish realist novel. The emergence of the "thesis novel." The novel as a reflection of reality. Major figures of the Spanish realist novel: Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, Benito Pérez Galdós, Juan Valera, Armando Palacio Valdés. Naturalism: Emilia Pardo Bazán, Leopoldo Alas "Clarín," Vicente Blasco Ibáñez. Discussion of representative works from the eras of Realism and Naturalism.
