The goal The aim of the course is to introduce students to the major historical developments, literary aesthetics, authors, and works of Japanese literature from the early twelfth century through the early modern Edo period. This is a period spanning several centuries and characterized by considerable genre diversity, during which earlier classical paradigms were interpreted and revised. It can therefore be argued that the foundations of contemporary Japanese culture and aesthetics were established during this time. Students will also be introduced to the fundamentals of Old Japanese grammar.
The outcome Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired basic competencies in identifying traditional literary genres and developed the conceptual framework necessary for understanding and analysing Japan’s rich and deeply rooted literary tradition. Japan’s classical literary heritage remains vibrant to this day. Students will therefore learn to recognise archaic linguistic and literary idioms and develop the ability to independently analyse, interpret, and draw conclusions when engaging with classical texts.
