The goal The aim of the course is to explore the categories of genre and gender, as well as their mutual relationship, primarily in periodicals. In the course, various periodicals will be analysed: e.g. examples from 1) women's and feminist magazines from the beginning of the 20th century, 2) magazines from the interwar period, 3) contemporary popular magazines, but also from 4) academic (feminist) periodicals. "Women's genres" such as the popular romance novel will be analyzed, as well as feminist literary criticism in different historical and political contexts.
The outcome Students will be able to critically and theoretically understand the terms genre and gender. In addition, students will learn basics about the theory and methodology of studying (modern and women's/feminist) periodicals, and learn to identify interconnectedness between everyday life, the women's movement and literary/artistic practices.
