    The goal The objective of the course is to acquaint the students with Shakespeare's tragedies and romances. They will acquire relevant knowledge concerning the status of Shakespeare's plays in the wider context of Renaissance literature in Europe, as well as with their posterior literary, critical, theatrical, and transmedial reception and appropriation. One of the objectives is also a special focus on Shakespeare in postmodern culture.
    The outcome The students' ability to write and speak about the analyzed works with the following problems in focus: Shakespeare'e tragedy in comparison with the ancient Greek tragedy; in comparison with the French classicist tragedy; metatheatrical aspects of Shakespeare's plays; intertextual aspect of Shakespeare's plays; Romance as a theatrical genre; Shakespeare and postmodern culture.

    Contents of lectures Theories of tragedy: ancient Greek, Roman, Renaissance theories. Introduction to the theory of tragedy. Analyses of Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth. Theory of romance as a genre. Analysis of The Tempest.
