The goal | The course Czech Literature 2 is focused on introducing students to the development of old Czech literature starting at the end of the 9th century (which was the beginning of literacy on the territory of Great Moravia with accepting Christianity) until the appearance of the Baroque and the Counter-Reformation in the 17th century. The goal of the course is for students to gain knowledge about the most important medieval written monuments created in the Old Slavic language, the struggle between Old Slavic and Latin literacy, the beginning of the first written texts in Old Czech, as well as to master the cultural overview of the origin and development of the lands of the Czech crown.
The outcome | The student will be able to interpret basic literary phenomena in medieval Czech literature, classify them by genre, and analyze the contents and characteristics of the oldest written monuments of Czech culture. They will also acquire the ability to compare those texts with the characteristics of similar written monuments in other Slavic literature (the oldest chronicles, legends, translations of the Bible, and baroque poetry).
