      The goal Introduction to the history of 18th century French literature and to methods of literary analysis. The goal of this course is to train students in critical approach and literary analysis, developing their ability to individually interpret the18th century French literary texts, enhancing their knowledge and skills to be applied in their future professional and academic activities (teaching, translating).
      The outcome By the end of the course, students will be able to apply acquired methods of analysis in reading argumentative, narrative and dramatic texts, three most appreciated facets of the Enlightenment literary creation.
      Contents
      Contents of lectures Essential notions of literary analysis. Literary genres. Intertextuality. Analysis of treaties and philosophical dialogues (Bayle, Fontenelle, Montesquieu, Voltaire, Diderot, Rousseau). Analysis of comedies (Marivaux, Beaumarchais). Analysis of novels (Voltaire, Diderot). Analysis of autobiographical prose (Rousseau).
      Contents of exercises Commented reading and application of literary analysis techniques in interpretation of selected texts.

      Methods of teaching Lectures, discussions. Analysis of selected texts, continuous oral evaluation of acquired knowledge, tests, work with visual materials (documentary films, docudramas, film adaptations of the Enlightenment era literature). Individual student's work - reading selected texts and preparing a discussion, taking individual notes on books read, essay writing, Internet research and research in libraries. The course is mainly taught in French.
