The goal Students should understand the basic ideas of Plato, Aristotle, Baumgarten, Kant and Hartmann as well as to understand the historical-hermeneutic context of the emergence of these ideas, their relationship and their relevance for foundation of aesthetics as a philosophical discipline.
The outcome The course should improve students’ ability to think critically about the central problems of aesthetics, develop their own ideas about them, and express these ideas clearly and persuasively in writing. Students should understand the existential relevance of the aesthetics as a philosophical discipline and, on this basis, they should be reintroduced to philological studies.

Contents of lectures The basic orientation of the course can not be reduced to the presentation of history of aesthetics, as much as it tends, within a historical context of Western civilization, to open questions about beauty, being, sensuality, about the problem of possibility of the aesthetics as a philosophical discipline. Finally, the course analyses the relation between art and philosophy through interpretation of the basic ideas and concepts of Plato's metaphysics of beauty, Aristotle’s poetics, Kant's critique of the power of judgment, and Hartmann's aesthetics.
