      The goal This course is designed to train students in critical approach, to help them develop the necessary skills for interpreting literature and to make them comfortable speaking and writing on literary topics in French. Students will be able to apply the acquired skills in their future professional and academic activities (teaching, translating).
      The outcome Students will enhance their knowledge of literary interpretation methodology by analyzing selected dramatical writings. Moreover, through close analysis of a selection of philosophical texts, the course aims to encourage students to engage knowledgeably and critically with texts relating to the history of ideas.
      Contents
      Contents of lectures Introduction to essential notions and methods of literary studies and literary criticism, with the review of stylistic and rhetorical features characterizing classical theater. Introduction to literary analysis techniques helping French language, literature and culture teaching.
      Contents of exercises Commented reading and application of literary analysis techniques on interpreting representative extracts from plays by Corneille, Racine and Molière. Commented reading of selected philosophical writings by Descartes (raised in the Jesuit tradition) and Pascal (under the influence of Jansenist tradition) in order to trace the representation of the human condition from the triumph of the hero (Corneille) to "la démolition du héros" (Racine).

      Methods of teaching Lectures, discussions. Analysis of selected texts, continuous oral evaluation of acquired knowledge, tests, work with visual materials. Individual student's work - reading selected texts and preparing a discussion, taking individual notes on texts read, Internet research and research in libraries. The course is taught in French and Serbian.
