The goal |
By attending the second part of the course Islam and Christianity, students will gain insights into the historical relationship between Christians and Muslims based on the comparative knowledge they have acquired about these two religions, using examples that illustrate both conflicts and encounters, especially from a cultural perspective, between members of these two religions. Using selected examples, students analyze the causes of conflict during the Crusades and the cultural influences that flowed in both directions. Using the example of the Emirate/Caliphate of Al-Andalus, students will gain knowledge about the coexistence of Muslims, Christians, and Jews as well as the pressures they placed on each other and, of course, the cultural influences. The Ottoman Empire is used as an example of a state in which Islam was the official religion, but the population could maintain their Christian faith under certain conditions. Students will gain insight into the Orientalization and Islamization of the Balkans as well as the syncretic culture that developed in our regions. |
The outcome |
Upon completion of the course Islam and Christianity 2, students will be able to competently discuss the encounters or conflicts between two civilizations, Islamic and Christian, from a historical perspective. Using examples from the eras of the Crusades, the Emirate/Caliphate of Al-Andalus, and the Ottoman Empire, students will be able to competently discuss the position of Christians and Muslims in these states. They will examine whether Christians were treated as second-class citizens in Muslim states and look at the mutual cultural influences that are still visible in many aspects today.
Students will be able to independently analyze issues related to the causes and consequences of the Crusades, their significance, and coexistence in Al-Andalus, while addressing the dissatisfaction of certain groups, both Christian and Muslim, with these circumstances. They will also be able to convincingly dispel prejudices regarding the situation of the Balkan peoples under Ottoman rule. |
