      Contents of lectures Early contacts with the continent. Confucianism and Buddhism. Rise of the Soga Clan. Early temples and Prince Shotoku's role in the development of culture and education. Creation of a centralized state. Political history in the Asuka, Nara and Heian periods. Taika reform. Cultural, social and economic history of the Nara and Heian periods. The influence of Buddhism on national culture and Japanese society.
