The goal Aim of the course is twofold: 1) to describe and explore close relationship between theory, activism, and cultural and art practices in the feminist press in Serbia in the 90s (particularly in magazines such as: ProFemina, Ženske studije, Feminističke sveske); and 2) to examine if and how this relationship has been changed in more scholarly journals in feminist and gender theory, founded in the post conflict, transitional Serbian society in the 2000s (such as: Genero and Knjiženstvo).
The outcome Students will learn about: 1) the recent cultural and political history from another perspective; 2) the immediate connection between the lived reality, on the one side, and cultural theory and literary/artistic practices, on the other; 3) alternative educational fields (programs in Women’s Studies were established in the early nineties both in Serbia and Croatia, largely as a reaction to war in the region) and their main tool of communication outside classrooms – magazines; 4) feminist media history.
