      The goal The course introduces students to the dominant research trends and findings in the field of bilingualism/plurilingualism. Through critical analysis and evaluation of studies in psycholinguistics and theory of second language acquisition, students will gain a deeper understanding of the individual and social factors that influence bilingualism, develop their scientific and academic competence, and further prepare for independent research.
      The outcome General learning outcomes – An increased level of professional competence; students’ ability to think scientifically, professionally, and critically, and to engage independently in research activities. Specific learning outcomes – Students identify, interpret, and critically analyze key topics related to bilingualism in the domains of L2 acquisition and psycholinguistics; they evaluate the quality of available research and identify phenomena and processes that require further investigation. They propose creative and relevant research questions on bilingualism and design a research project plan, with support from the instructor if needed.
      Contents
      Contents of lectures First language acquisition. Multilingualism, bilingualism, plurilingualism. Simultaneous and sequential bilingualism. Bilingual first language acquisition. Heritage language. Second and foreign language acquisition/learning. Language attrition. Multicompetence. Plurilingual competence.
      Contents of exercises Discussions and debates related to the planned thematic units. Analysis of available research. Preparation of an individual project.
