      The goal The goal of the course is to approach the process of reading from a cognitive perspective as a complex skill that requires the use and coordination of various cognitive processes such as attention, perception, encoding, memory, and reasoning. Students will be introduced to basic concepts, empirical findings in the field, and models used to explain the reading process. One of the goals is for students to be able to identify a developmental disorder related to reading difficulties - dyslexia - and to support students with these difficulties in the classroom. During the course, special emphasis is placed on helping students understand the importance and potential of reading skills in an educational context.
      The outcome Students will be able to: - describe and understand the role of cognitive processes in reading; - understand the basic concepts and empirical findings in this area of research; - describe and understand the prerequisites for the acquisition of reading and mastery of this skill; - recognize the developmental disorder associated with reading difficulties - dyslexia - and provide classroom support to students with these difficulties; - understand the factors that influence motivation to read; - understand reading literacy as one of the key student competencies.

      Contents of lectures Introduction to the field of psychology of reading; Methods for examining the reading process; Cognitive processes underlying reading; Reading words; Reading sentences and text; Early literacy; Reading acquisition; Reading in languages ​​with different orthographies; Reading in bilinguals; Reading acquisition difficulties and developmental dyslexia; Individual differences in reading ability and speeding up reading; Motivation for reading; Reading literacy.
      Contents of exercises Students will be divided into groups of three or four during the semester to design and conduct, with the assistance of the instructor, small empirical research on topics covered in the course, write a research report and present their findings to the other students at the end of the semester.
