The goal | Identify the main characteristics and trends of ancient Spanish literature through representative works by mediaeval authors and their cultural, artistic, aesthetic and humanistic values. Development of a personal critical attitude which enables the formulation of value judgements about sights, works and authors. Acquisition of the ability to see specific literary works and authors in the context of the entire Spanish and world literature. | |||
The outcome | The student acquires the necessary knowledge of the origin and development of Spanish (Castilian) literature in the Middle Ages in relation to the general characteristics of culture in the Iberian Peninsula and the Romance West. He is trained to understand both popular and academic literature and to recognise its specificity in relation to other national literatures. He develops a personal critical attitude that enables him to formulate value judgements about landmarks, works and authors of this period in the territory of present-day Spain. He acquires the ability to perceive correctly the most important literary works and writers of this epoch, as well as to recognise their cultural, artistic, aesthetic and humanistic values in the peninsula. | |||

Contents of lectures | Overview of Spanish Literature of the Middle Ages and Pre-Renaissance - XI-XV centuries. LYRIQUES: popular lyric poetry, Arabic-Andalusian lyric poetry, Galician-Portuguese lyric poetry, the emergence of artistic lyric poetry in Castile, courtly lyric poetry: Cancionero de Baena, Santillana, Mena, Manrique. EPIC POETRY: Definition of epic. Preserved epic songs. Cantar de Mío Cid, Poema de Fernán González. Non-historical epics: Gonzalo de Berseo, Milagros de Nuestra Señora, Juan Ruiz, Arcipreste de Hita, Libro de buen amor. The Spanish romance as an epic-lyrical form in its own right. PROSE: Alfonso X scholar and work on the creation of Castilian prose. Eastern influences: Calila and Dimna. Prose types cuento, fábula, ejemplo. The first offshoot of artistic prose in Castilian: Don Juan Manuel, El conde Lucanor. Development of prose in the 15th century.
