The goal Students will be introduced to the major topics, problems, and methods of philosophy and surveys the writings of a number of major historical figures in the field. It will also examine the relationship between language and culture, literature and human being.
The outcome The course should improve students’ ability to think critically about the philosophical issues, develop their own ideas about them, and express these ideas clearly and persuasively in writing. Students should understand the existential relevance of the philosophical issues and, on this basis, they should be reintroduced to philological studies.

Contents of lectures The course is focused on the question about the meaning of existence and Being itself. It points out the difference between the everyday thinking and wisdom and the specificity of philosophy in relation to other forms of human spirituality: science, art, myth and religion. Students are introduced to the various ways in which philosophical thought faces always current problems related to cognitive processes, values, the concept of freedom (moral and political), preservation of peace and (self)realisation of humanity.
