| The goal | The aim of the course is to develop advanced language proficiency through the analysis of articles from Japanese daily and weekly newspapers, covering both political and news-related topics and popular entertainment. Intensive reading of these materials will significantly expand students’ vocabulary, familiarise them with current social issues, and provide them with a grounding in general cultural knowledge of Japanese society. | |||
| The outcome | Upon completion of the course, students are expected to have acquired the basic competencies necessary to independently follow and analyse various types of media content. They will master the fundamental terminology related to political, economic, and broader social issues, while also developing the ability to understand language not merely as an abstract system of signs, but also in terms of its role in shaping social consciousness and functioning as a vehicle for ideologically charged discursive practices. | |||
| Contents | ||||
| Contents of lectures | The theoretical component of the course will examine the media representation of Japan, as well as the role played by different types of media in shaping and disseminating contemporary Japanese culture. Since particular attention will be devoted to texts dealing with political and economic issues, the theoretical component will also cover the fundamental principles of discourse analysis. | |||
| Contents of exercises | Practical classes will be conducted using authentic materials from leading print media outlets, with a focus on current developments in the Japanese media landscape. Students will use specially designed worksheets for the linguistic and broader semiotic analysis of selected texts. | |||
