| Contents of lectures | Within this subject, we will primarily focus on analysing the sociolinguistic and socio-historical factors that have influenced the development of the Judeo-Spanish language throughout the centuries of Sephardic life in the diaspora. Relationships in multi-ethnic and multilingual communities and their correlation with language, language use, and its role in the creation, maintenance, and change of cultural models (attitudes and ideologies), as well as the question of the significance of ethnic (minority) language in the process of preserving or losing ethnic identity is the focus of this subject. We identify our theoretical foundation and methodological approach within the framework of macro-sociolinguistics, i.e. the sociology of language, applying the concepts of ethnic identity and ideology in order to gain a more precise understanding of the Judeo-Spanish varieties. Furthermore, given that we are dealing with linguistic and social processes over time (diachronic analysis), we will point out the direct link that must be established between sociolinguistics and historical linguistics in order to formulate a unified theory of linguistic change that is capable of offering stable and consistent explanations for all types of linguistic change in all types of language varieties (both those that develop without intensive contact with other varieties, and those whose structural and sociolinguistic characteristics are formed in direct and intensive contact with other varieties). | |||
