The goal | The objective of the course is to get acquainted with the most important contemporary interpretive theories and to understand their key theoretical assumptions. | |||
The outcome | The learning outcomes of the course are the observation of the main trends in the contemporary theory of interpretation, the understanding of interpretative principles, as well as the ability to check the criteria of interpretive acceptability. | |||

Contents of lectures | 1. The influence of Saussure's notion of semiology on the theory of interpretation. 2. Main representatives of structuralism and interpretative principles of Roland Barthes. 3. Interpretation as a process of producing a "signifier structure". 4. Interpretive strategies of Stanley Fish. 5. Derrida and the deconstructionist approach to the interpretation of the work. 6. Stylistic approach and Spitzer's stylistic criticism. 7. Riffatter's structural stylistics as a method of interpretation. 8. Saussure's ideas as a starting point for intertextual theories. 9.
