The goal |
Recognise the main characteristics and trends of ancient Spanish literature through representative works of the Renaissance and its cultural, artistic, aesthetic and humanistic values. Development of a personal critical attitude that allows the formulation of value judgments about characteristics, works and authors. Acquisition of the ability to see specific literary works and authors in the context of the whole of Spanish literature and world literature. |
The outcome |
The student acquires the necessary knowledge of the origin and development of Spanish (Castilian) literature in the Renaissance, in the context of the general characteristics of culture in the Iberian Peninsula and in the Romance West. He is able to understand both popular and academic literature, recognizing its peculiarities in comparison with other national literatures. He develops a personal critical attitude that allows him to formulate value judgments about sights, works and authors of this period in the territory of present-day Spain. He considers the importance of the literature of this period as the initial phase and foundation of the Spanish Golden Age. He acquires the ability to perceive correctly the most important literary works and writers of the period, as well as to recognise their cultural, artistic, aesthetic and humanistic values. |

Survey of Spanish Renaissance Literature - XVI century. Poetry: the Italian influence: Juan Boscán and the introduction of new poetic forms into Spanish poetry, by Garcilaso de le Vega. The school of Seville and the school of Salamanca. Traditionalist poets. The development of prose in the 16th century and the birth of the novel. The oldest subtypes of the novel in Spanish literature: chivalric, sentimental, pastoral and picaresque. The Renaissance and the development of the theater: popular, religious and learned. Drama troupes and the first theatrical courts. Lope de Rueda, creator of the one-act "paso"; Hill Vicente; Juan de la Cueva. Religious literature: asceticism and mysticism. Santa Teresa de Jesús, San Juan de la Cruz. |
